Palace of Manufactures

The south-row palace east of the Tower of Jewels, crammed with the world's finished goods, from English pottery to Japanese culture pearls.

Manufactures stood on the south front just east of the Tower of Jewels, separated from Varied Industries by the Court of Flowers. Because it touched three courts (Universe, Abundance and Flowers), Todd noted that 'three large corners' were cut out of it. Its avenues ran east–west and its streets north–south, with street signs posted in every palace of the group so visitors could find their way.

The Guide says space was allotted to four thousand exhibitors, sharing a classification with Varied Industries that ran from stationery and cutlery to textiles, furniture, heating and clothing. Todd remembered it as 'full to the doors with things that people need.' It was not all utilitarian: the English sent 'their matchless potteries,' Italian dealers brought marble copies of classical statuary, and the Japanese showed culture pearls.

Construction had one notable setback. Early in 1914 a southeast gale blew down three of the columns supporting its dome, along with two trusses just set in place. The accident cost the contractor $8,000 and delayed completion 36 days. Even so, it was among the first four palaces declared ready for exhibits, on May 15, 1914.
